Toyota Crown – A Midsize Replacement For the Old School Avalon

A midsize replacement for the old-school Avalon, the Crown is a mix of sedan and crossover with its unique height. Toyota says it was designed to simplify ingress and egress, which is particularly important for older Japanese buyers.

Inside, the Crown offers a high level of technology with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, ambient lighting, and dual-zone climate control. It’s also a quiet place to ride, thanks to extensive soundproofing materials and acoustic glass.

Engines

The Crown is a sedan on the Toyota New Global Architecture K (TNGA-K) platform. It features a front strut and rear multi-link suspension tuning that provides both a comfortable ride and handling agility.

The engine in the Crown is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder with an independent electric motor that turns the rear wheels. It is supplemented by a six-speed automatic transmission.

This type of hybrid powertrain has been used in RAV4 and Sequoia SUVs. It offers excellent fuel economy and responsive acceleration.

The Crown has two gasoline hybrid powertrains, a 2.5-liter A25A-FXS that produces 172 kW (231 hp; 234 PS) and a more powerful turbocharged 2.4-liter T24A-FTS engine that produces a total of 257 kW (345 hp; 349 PS). The Hybrid Max powertrain is exclusive to the Platinum trim and puts a greater emphasis on performance than efficiency. It is expected to produce 340 horsepower and deliver an average fuel economy of 28 mpg.

Transmissions

Built around the Toyota New Global Architecture K (TNGA-K) platform, Crown delivers sedan driving comfort and crossover-like ride height. Its raised overall height is nearly four inches higher than its Camry counterpart and increases road visibility for easier entry and exit.

Crown offers an array of premium features for a complete and satisfying ownership experience. All grades feature the North American-developed Audio Multimedia System with a 12.3-inch touchscreen and an intelligent assistant available through Drive Connect*.

The Platinum grade offers a direct shift six-speed automatic transmission that uses Hydraulic multi-plate wet start clutch technology to provide responsive acceleration. The transmission works with the HYBRID MAX system to minimize shift drop across the power band, making hybrid driving more enjoyable and efficient.

The Platinum also has an advanced Park System that automatically applies to steer, shifting, acceleration, and braking to parallel or reverse perpendicular parking while keeping the vehicle in the park until the driver resumes control. Additionally, the Advanced Park System includes a Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection that can be activated when approaching an intersection to prevent collisions with pedestrians.

Safety

Toyota crown is packed with safety features that help reduce the impact of a collision. They include airbags and rear door locks for children, a standard rearview camera, automatic high beams and road sign assist.

There’s also the new Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 system that comes standard across the lineup. It features radar adaptive cruise control, lane departure alert, lane tracing assist and blind-spot monitors.

Besides, Toyota crown also features an Advanced Park System that helps you park safely in a tight space. The Platinum version also adds a Pre-Collision System with pedestrian, motorcyclist and guardrail detection.

Every Toyota Crown model is equipped with upscale technology, including a 12.3-inch digital gauge display and a user-friendly infotainment system. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support and over-the-air updates for both systems. There’s also a front-row wireless charging pad and two USB ports.

Technology
